A lot of crazy stuff has been happening with the announcement of the new Pebble 2 and Pebble Time 2. They have literally quadrupled their Kickstarter goal in a day or so, at the time this article was written.
Why should you buy one of them over the previous models?
This is a question I’ve asked myself. I’ve even backed the Time 2 already; but I’m regretting my decision more and more each minute. I am in love with the larger screen on the Time 2. I’m happy that they thought that the bezel was way too big, and brought it down to a normal size. I think that is the most iconic feature that they have utilized in the new models. Everyone wanted less bezel and more screen, so they’re giving it to us… in NOVEMBER.
Let me tell you a little story about my first time ever backing something on Kickstarter. It was the Pebble Time. Yes, Pebble. I placed my backer order, along with about 5,000 other people; then I waited. I waited so long, patience turned to frustration. The orders were pushed back and pushed back, until I finally saw the box arrive at my door. The entire process took about 5 months, the best I can remember. I am very hesitant to go through that again. I have Kickstarter PTSD thanks to that.
The new Pebble series is pretty neat, I’ll give you that. Having up to twelve days of battery life is amazing, although you’ll probably only get the 7 the first one promised. The 53% larger display is quite amazing also; and a new version of Timeline OS to boot! Here are some of the new specs and promised stats below.
Verdict
What would I tell you to do if you’re considering buying the Pebble 2 or Pebble Time 2? I would say beware the kickstarter process. It is a mean machine, and will grind up your patience and spit it back at you without blinking. I know it’s hard to fulfill such eager promises that so many desire. I understand creating a product like this in such a short amount of time is a task; but don’t promise something you can’t deliver… even if it is 5 months late! I just hope everyone actually gets their watches by January.
If you have the Pebble Time (1st Gen.), I would say keep it and wait until the 3rd round. If you have the original Pebble, I would suggest getting a new one, as those are older than the Pebble Time. It would probably be a good time to upgrade, but remember what I said about Kickstarter.
