Jaybird is known to make premium wireless bluetooth earbuds and following the success of their X2s from last year, Jaybird have decided to continue their momentum into this year with the introduction of the Jaybird Freedom.
In traditional Jaybird fashion, the pair of Freedom earbuds come with different accessories out of the box such as wing tips, ear tips, charging clips and the cable making customization according to preference fast and easy. Their versatility allows for the user to wear the earbuds over the ear or under the ear with as many or little add ons. But once you’ve found your preference, the earbuds fit very well.
The battery, control module and microphone are located only a few inches down the cord at the back which tends to cause some discomfort around the back of the neck or ear at times when running. It would have been great if it was placed a little lower down to add to comfort levels however putting this minor lapse aside, the cord has enough slack to fit most heads while retaining the premium build quality of the entire device.
Onto how the Freedoms sound, they produce very flat music out of the box however that too can easily be customized with Jaybird’s application. It allows users to check battery levels and adjust equalizer settings. These settings are saved directed to the firmware which means the profiles do not get lost when switching or using multiple devices. The application also provides pre-installed equalizer settings but there doesn’t seem to be way to share a customized setting.
Although the Freedoms flaunt positives, the lack of stable battery life may be a deal breaker for many. When connected via bluetooth, the pair of headphones constantly remind you of a 10% battery decrease through a lady’s “cheerful” voice. This happens every 30 minutes of use which doesn’t add up to the promised 8 hours of battery life by Jaybird which can only be achievable by connecting the pair of headphones to a charging clip making their sleek body rather bulky and uncomfortable for use.
Overall, the Jaybird Freedoms are a very respectable pair of ear buds especially because of how much one is able to customize the pair. Retailing for $200, these may be a hard sell for fitness reasons solely however if these are required for daily use involving accurate sound production, the pair provide great performance at the expense of regular charging.
