When the S6 Active released last year, it was an impressive device, but I could not find myself recommending it to many people over the regular S6. What a difference a year makes… meet the S7 Active.

The S7 Active is definitely not as pretty or glamorous as its brother the regular S7, but it does manage to pack a pretty nice design while also being extremely durable. That’s the word I would use to describe all the features the S7 Active offers: durable. So what’s better about the the S7Active?  It packs a very rugged flagship, a beefy 4000 mAh battery (which lasted me an easy day and a half), a killer camera, and a vibrant 1440p panel on the front.

No surprises: the performance and fluidity are what you’d expect in a 2016 flagship at this price point, but let’s talk about why you would (or wouldn’t) buy this phone – the build.

The casing feels pretty sturdy, and it definitely can take a bunch of drops, but sadly, it does show marks and scuffs on the corners, depending on how you drop the phone.

The phone also packs a polycarbonate layer over the gorilla glass 4 to prevent cracked screens from up to 5 foot drops.  The concept of a shatter resistant display is definitely very cool, but the execution here is definitely not. Due to this polycarbonate layer, the screen shows scratches very easily, and within a few hours my phone was absolutely covered with micro scratches.

Balancing out that disappointment, the Active has a rating of an IP68 water resistance, without any port flaps, meaning the Active can be dropped into a pool, a toilet, or have water spilled on it with no problem. Very cool.

Samsung did a really good job implementing these features without ruining the experience with this phone, and I can recommend it to certain audiences, but not the average user. Here’s how I see it – if your job or lifestyle requires a tough phone that can take a beating, the S7 Active should be at the top of your list.
